An excellent tour for those who primarily want to ride in the beautiful central Tuscan landscape, for whom 50-70 km per day and a level of several hundred meters are not enough, who want to reach as many places as possible and want to go fast. In a word: those who don’t want an active rest, but come specifically to ride!
On this tour we ride in the most classic Tuscan locations (south of Siena). The area is absolutely suitable for a training camp, as you can do almost all kinds of tours in the diverse area: a few kilometers with many levels, many km with few levels, many km with many levels. During the tour we will visit the valleys of the Orcia and Merse rivers, ride in the breathtaking Crete Senesi, and discover the most beautiful roads of the Chianti region! The central location allows us to do a lot of cycling with almost minimal driving! We guarantee those who come on the tour will be extremely tired and will take home one of the greatest cycling experiences of their life!
The accommodation is in a high-quality agrotourism in double rooms.

About the tour
The location of the tour is the classic region of Tuscany, the region south of Siena. This area is the most beautiful part of Tuscany, and in the most beautiful season, in spring! On the tour we will avoid tourist attractions, instead of cycling, we will focus on the hidden values: our route is characterized by hidden, undeservedly unknown towns, castles, the ubiquitous cedars and the hilly countryside typical of Tuscany. On the tour – similar to the classic, shorter tours – we visit the most famous Tuscan attractions, we cycling in the Chianti region, in the Orcia and Merse river valleys, we also visit the coast, but of course all our tours are longer and with a higher level.
We strongly recommend the tour to those who are not afraid of a challenge, who are persistent, who want to enjoy breathtaking views (for this view, you have to suffer!) and enjoy the pleasant fatigue caused by the challenge. The tour is mainly organized for roadbikers who have bike experience. We welcome enthusiastic amateurs who are used to cycling, but we also strongly recommend it to those who want to try themselves.
On the challenge tours the pace and level are higher than what is comfortable. Despite this we ride in a group, we wait for each section and help each other, so we strongly recommend it to enthusiastic cyclists as well. We will stop several times during the tour, but we will not rest for hours. The tours are on average 80-120 km long, with an elevation of 1000-2500 m, we will go at an average speed of 20 km/h on average, and rarely finish in 6-7 hours.
Bicycle
Everyone should take part in this tour with their own bicycle (road).
Difficulty
The routes have a difficulty of 4/5, sometimes 5/5, and can be completed with a better than average physique. On average, they are 80-120 km long, sometimes with elevations of 1500-2500 m, average speed around 20 km/h. The given level is indicated daily in the program (Info: What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?). It is important to know that although the pace is more advanced than the average tour, it is not a race pace. It is suitable for viewing, photography and drinking coffee.
Who is it for?
If you have never been to Tuscany and you want to meet an authentic, but relatively unknown region for the first time.
If you like to cycling in landscapes where there is a challenge and you biking min. 3-4000 km / year.
If you like the unknown, abandoned, but beautiful countryside!
If you like longer, higher-level tours.
We answer all your other questions here:
Day 1: Travel
We depart early in the morning from Budapest with our minibus. It takes 11-12 hours, depending on traffic, and we arrive at the accommodation south of Siena in the late afternoon.
Day 2: Crete Senesi
On our first day, as a warm-up, we immediately visit a little-known but beautiful landscape, the Crete Senesi! The grey-brown land, dotted with pits, stretching to the SE of Siena is one of the most beautiful regions that can be seen in Tuscany. The sunset or the sunrise casts deep shadows on the “broken” hills. Anyone who has seen this region once will never forget it. On the tour, we will visit Asciano, reach a famous monastery that is still in operation on abandoned country roads, and then we will continue on through beautiful roads to Buonconveno, where we will have lunch. In some places, the tour goes along the route of the famous L’eroica retro bicycle race! We return to the accommodation from Buonconventó on a beautiful road. Distance: 85 km, elevation: 1000 m, planned time: 5 hours.
Difficulty: 3/5.
Day 3: Montalcino, Radicofani and the Asso Valley
On our second day we visit iconic landscapes. We start from Torrenieri, drive there. From here we climb to Montalcino on a fine hill, this town is the home of the Brunello wine, and then on a fine and long slope we reach the abandoned monastery, the Abbazia di Sant’Antimo. We will see the monastery then we will descended to the Orcia river cross it on the bridge, and then a long climb to the highest point of the tour (1000m) will begin. We cycling around the side of the Amiata mountain, stopping in two small towns on the side of the mountain. After a quick descent, a climb follows, and we reach Radicofani. The tower offers a beautiful view, in good weather you can see for 50-70 km. We return on a longer slope.
Distance: 110 km, elevation: 1900 m, planned time: 8 hours. Difficulty: 5/5
Day 4: Val d'Ocia
This day is unknown at home, but it belongs to classic Tuscan towns, and in addition, this region holds the most beautiful Tuscan locations for us. We start from the accommodation and then head towards Pienza through the Asso valley. Pienza is the home of Pecorino cheese, the whole town is filled with the smell of the cheese. From here we will ride to Montepulciano on a beautiful road lined with cedars, the town that makes great wines and dominates the hilltop. We look around the zigzag streets and then continue on. We reach Monticchiello, a jewel town, on third-rate little-known roads. From here we head home, via Bagno Vignoni and then Torreineri
Distance: 120 km, elevation: 1800 m, planned time: 8 hours (with sightseeing). Difficulty: 4/5
Day 5: Monastery of San Galgano, Merse Valley
The destination of the tour of the day is one of the most beautiful and at the same time one of the most abandoned (and perhaps the most unknown) landmarks in Tuscany, the monastery of San Galgano. We do not start from the accommodation, but drive next to Siena. Right at the beginning, we take a gentle but long ascent into the woods, and then we proceed to our destination on a majestic, winding road on the hillside. Our route goes through the valley of the Merse river in several places, we touch smaller towns and climb up to Chiusdino. At the end of the road, we reach the abandoned monastery, which we also look. From there, following the Merse route, we ascend through a beautiful wooded area and then race down. There will be one more uphill and one downhill.
Distance: 115 km, elevation: 2000 m, planned time: 8 hours (with sightseeing). difficulty: 5/5.
Day 6: Chianti
The route winds through Tuscany’s most famous wine region, the Chianti region. Beautiful and sunny hillsides, beautiful castles, secluded towns, hundreds of wine cellars, peace and quiet await you. We start from the accommodation, through the Crete Senesi, on a super panoramic road to reach Chianti (we will have already covered 30km by then). Our route immediately leads through castles and wine cellars in the rolling landscape. We also visit the most beautiful small towns of the region, visit a wine-producing farm (wine tasting is also possible), and then arrive at the cycling center, Gaiole in Chianti (this is where the L’Eroica race starts in the fall). We turn into Radda in Chianti, then return to the car on a beautiful, sloping road lined with vineyards and olive trees, which awaits us on the edge of Chianti.
Distance: 100 km, elevation: 1600 m, planned time: 7 hours. Difficulty: 4/5.
Day 7: Home
We check out in the morning and travel home. We’ll travel during the day and arrive home in the afternoon.
Attention! The program may change due to the weather and other reasons, which basically does not affect the distance and possible difficulty.
Our accommodation will be in an agrotourism south of Siena, in double rooms.
