The longest, the most beautiful, the most enjoyable, the bestof.

If you want to see the best of Tuscany, love challenges and want to get from somewhere to somewhere, then this is your trip! The tour runs through the most beautiful Tuscan landscapes, in 10 days we will ride nearly 800 km, visiting the most beautiful parts of Tuscany. A challenging, but at the same time the most meaningful and beautiful Tuscan tour! Be bold, fearless and adventurous!

Tuscany is one of the most beautiful regions in Europe, the place everyone dreams of. First and foremost, of course, by car. But Tuscany can only be truly explored by bike, that’s how you get to know its true self. You hear the birds, you see the winding roads at the foot of the hills up close, you smell the scents, the silence of the small towns. Especially in spring. If you know where to look, Tuscany looks mostly exactly like it does in movies and pictures: rolling, green hills, cypress trees on top, lonely stone houses on the hills and of course the excellent pasta, ice cream and coffee. At the same time, Tuscany is also one of the best places for cycling: the view is magnificent, the food is excellent, the roads are shaped by nature, the towns are lovely. There are no huge mountains, but there are some decent climbs. The road undulates along with the undulation of the landscape. Sometimes down, sometimes up. Tuscany has one “disadvantage”: it’s too big to explore in a week or two, even by car. Even for us, we would have to start four completely separate tours to cover the region, and even then we’d miss out on so much! (Biking in Tuscany – read our article!)

We have designed this tour to take you through the most beautiful and worthwhile areas and roads in one go. We have designed it for those who are not afraid of challenges and want to see as much of the most famous Italian province as possible by bike. Our local knowledge allows us to guide you through it so that almost no enjoyable sights – and more importantly – good roads – are missed. We gradually cycle into the classic Tuscan landscape, not missing the sea, so that when we finally return to the sea, we end the tour on the largest Tuscan island. (Detailed program in the “Itinerary” tab!) We will visit three regions of Tuscany in 10 days (two weekends also fall into it). The tour is difficult, but worth it. It is specifically intended for those who cycle regularly and are in good condition. The pace will not be fast, so we are waiting for applications from those who can complete the distance, but do not necessarily desire a strong pace. (For a more upbeat, spring training type of experience, check out the national tours!)

Departure and arrival

Type of tour

The tour is a mix of the star tour and the Point-to-point tour. We will sleep at three accommodations, from where we will always cycle from house to house, but due to the multiple accommodations, we will have to move twice (we also planned the moving days so that we can cycle on those days as well). So this is a relatively comfortable tour, you don’t have to live out of a suitcase, as we will be at the different accommodations for 3-4 days.

Travel

The trip out and back will be by minibus, but individual travel is also possible, or you can also get there by plane (Pisa). We will bring the luggage and the bike!
The transportation at the location is also by a minibus.

About the tour

The tour is in Tuscany. We will travel almost the entire region, riding every worthwhile route. All this is guaranteed by the experience we have had on the roads of Tuscany for many years. We start the tour in the northern, central part. In Central Tuscany, nature and culture, the known and the unknown Tuscany meet.

Sometimes we discover world-famous places, and the next day we discover hidden, undeservedly unknown roads, towns and castles. This area is the hidden treasure of Tuscany! The roads wind through the hills, sometimes you have to fight the climbs, but the reward is in the scenery! We will have time to visit all the nearby places, and we will. From here, we will almost unnoticed enter the classic regions, where everything really is like in the movies! The region south of Siena (Crete Senesi) is the most beautiful part of Tuscany, and in the most beautiful season, spring! On the tour, we mostly avoid tourist attractions, and besides cycling, we focus on hidden values: our route is characterized by secluded, undeservedly unknown towns, castles, the ubiquitous cedars and the hilly countryside typical of Tuscany.

Montaione, spring, Tuscany

From the classic area, we move on to the least known and visited part of Tuscany, the Maremma region, which borders the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian coasts, from Livorno to Grosseto. Until the beginning of the last century, it was a marshy area that decimated the population.
The region is considered the ancestral home of the Etruscans, and in recent decades several ancient, huge Etruscan cities have been excavated. Still relatively sparsely populated today, it offers visitors wonderful roads, mountain villages and great beaches. They have great agrotourism, low traffic and spectacular roads. Among other things, here is one of the best cycling tourist routes in Italy, which we will ride, and from here you can sail to one of the best Tuscan cycling routes, Elba. We will complete this on the last day! See the detailed program under the “Program” tab!

Bicycle

Everyone on this tour will take their own bike (mainly road or gravel, occasionally a straight-handlebar hybrid). The tour is basically a touring type, but since we cover longer distances with more levels, we recommend it more for road riders. If you are not sure about your choice, ask us for advice!

Difficulty

The tour is 4/5 and 5/5 difficulty (depending on the day – difficult, very difficult). Can only be completed with a better than average physique, experienced cycling performance. The series load is high, although there may be rest days along the way. On average, we cycle 80-120 km per day, several times with 1000-2000 m elevation, average speed around 18-20 km/h – so it will not be high. It is important to know that although the pace is more advanced than the average tour, it is not a training or competition pace. So, if you can handle the distances and levels, but do not want to go to a competition pace, this is your tour! However, if you have never cycled 100km distances before, then do not start here! If you would like to talk about the tour, call me! (Info:
What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?).

Recommend it to

If you really want a challenging tour, but haven’t had the courage to take the plunge yet!
If you like cycling through beautiful landscapes.

The tour targets one of the most famous Etruscan village, Volterra. Volterra is an ancient town built on a significant hilltop, with Etruscan ancestors. We will cycle through exciting countryside all day, the view is reminiscent of classic Tuscan films. Before Volterra, we reach the town on a significant hilltop, where we look around. From there we descend on one of the most beautiful Tuscan roads, then climb another hill. We reach home on low-traffic but beautiful roads.

[timeline_item item_number=”5″ title=”5 days: Asciano, Crete Senesi

On our first day, as a warm-up, we immediately visit a little-known but beautiful landscape, the Crete Senesi! The grey-brown land, dotted with pits, stretching to the SE of Siena is one of the most beautiful regions that can be seen in Tuscany. The sunset or the sunrise casts deep shadows on the “broken” hills. Anyone who has seen this region once will never forget it. On the tour, we will visit Asciano, reach a famous monastery that is still in operation on abandoned country roads, and then we will continue on through beautiful roads to Buonconveno, where we will have lunch. In some places, the tour goes along the route of the famous L’eroica retro bicycle race! We return to the accommodation from Buonconventó on a beautiful road. Distance: 85 km, elevation: 1000 m, planned time: 5 hours.

Difficulty: 3/5.

[timeline_item item_number=”7″ title=”Day 7: Chianti

The route winds through Tuscany’s most famous wine region, the Chianti region. Beautiful and sunny hillsides, beautiful castles, secluded towns, hundreds of wine cellars, peace and quiet await you. We start from the accommodation, through the Crete Senesi, on a super panoramic road to reach Chianti (we will have already covered 30km by then). Our route immediately leads through castles and wine cellars in the rolling landscape. We also visit the most beautiful small towns of the region, visit a wine-producing farm (wine tasting is also possible), and then arrive at the cycling center, Gaiole in Chianti (this is where the L’Eroica race starts in the fall). We turn into Radda in Chianti, then return to the car on a beautiful, sloping road lined with vineyards and olive trees, which awaits us on the edge of Chianti. (Those who don’t want to cycle to the accommodation can come by car!) Distance: 120km, elevation gain: approx. 2100 m, planned time: 8 hours. Difficulty of the hike: 5/5.

[timeline_item item_number=”9″ title=”Day 9: Sassetta, Canneto,

On our first day, we visit several very small but beautiful towns while cycling in a beautiful environment. We leave the accommodation and head towards Canneto through a beautiful valley, forests and meadows. Although the road leads continuously uphill, you don’t feel it as much as you would on the gentle slope. The old town of Canneto consists of two streets and houses that are several hundred years old. From here we cycle to Monterverdi Marittimo, then Bolgheri, and from there we head back towards Monteverdi Marittimo. Then comes Sassetta.
After Sassetta we cycle to Suvereto along one of the most beautiful roads in Italy. Dozens of hairpin bends and steady downhill gradients make for an enjoyable ride.

Distance: 90 km, elevation gain: approx. 900 m. Difficulty: 3/5, with gentle climbs and lots of descents.
Planned time: 7 hours.

[timeline_item item_number=”11″ title=”Day 11: Elba

On our last day, we will circumnavigate the largest and most beautiful island in Tuscany. It will be one of the most enjoyable and beautiful days of our tour!
Our route takes us almost all the way to the sea, with hardly any tourists in spring and autumn, so we cycle on almost deserted roads and enjoy the blue sea. Sometimes we stop at a nicer beach, maybe we can go swimming.
For lunch we eat octopus or seafood prepared with local specialities. The road winds away from the sea in places, up into the mountains, offering magnificent panoramic views. We arrive back at the port in the afternoon.
If the team is in agreement and the stamina is there, a longer route is possible.

Distance: 68km, elevation: 1100m.
