Are you ready for a real adventure ride in Europe’s undiscovered bicycle paradise? Ride with us 80-100 km a day with stunning views, roaring rivers, waterfalls and sparkling alpine lakes, through lush meadows and passes, and mountain peaks. The majestic beauty of nature will make up for all the sweat suffered even in the hardest moments.

Head for the mangar!

Slovenia is Europe’s new center for active recreation. The new Austria! This country borders Hungary, but is much smaller than Austria in terms of nature and environment, there are plenty of mountains, valleys, rivers and hidden small towns. The services are European, the roads are of good quality, and the people are kind.

Our tour in the western part of the country is a 350 km road, touching the most beautiful places: we wind through passes, river valleys, we pass hidden small towns in order to reach the sea at the end. We sleep in a different place every day, our things are taken by minibus. Accommodation in high-quality hostels or hotels.

About the tour

During the five-day tour we make a loop of the Slovenian Alps, practically around the Triglav National Park. Their starting point near is the capital of the country, Ljubjana, and the destination is the see! During the five days, we travel five days (even on the departure and return days). Every day there will be horizontal and uphill and downhill sections. You have to prepare for it to be a difficult but not impossible tour! It is not specifically a pass tour (like our tour on the really difficult Iconic Passes), although there will be daily levels as usual, but on this route we will not climb giant alpine passes every day (with the exception of Mangar, which can be skipped). Most of the daily stages are in river valleys, but every day there is a longer, bigger climb (altitude differences of 500 – 1000 m). The king stage will be the 3rd day, when we will climb the most beautiful pass in Slovenia, but perhaps in Europe, Mangart (which is actually a saddle). The route (map and details under the program tab!): We start near Ljubjana, then head towards the Central Slovenian mountains.

Then we visit the Bohinj region. From there, we drive past Bled in a beautiful valley towards Kransja Gora. We also cross over to Italy, we also take the Millennium railway path, and then we head towards the interior of the Triglav National Park through passes.

We will climb Mangart, one of the most beautiful roads in Europe (not easy!), then we will drive next to the Soca river (we will also cycling close to its source). There were huge battles in this region during the First World War, the Hungarian army also lost a lot of people here, the monuments and watchtowers accompany our journey. After the Soca, we turn towards the sea next to the Slovenian – Italian border.

Most of the road is asphalted country road. Separated cycle path in some places. The pace of the day is not high, we will not go fast, but please note that this is a difficult tour, you need endurance! But it’s worth all the trouble!

Bicycle

A road bike (or gravel or hybrid bike – but only in extreme cases) is recommended for this tour. The best possible gear system is must have. During the tour we will climb several passes and higher points.

Difficulty

Most days of the tour are difficult (4/5, 5/5), but there are also easier days. The first two days will be many levels. The days can only be completed if you have stamina, endurance and/or greater bike experience. (Info: What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?).

Day 1: Travel, Idrija

We depart early in the morning from Budapest with our minibus. The journey takes 6-7 hours, depending on traffic, and we arrive around noon after Ljubljana. We unpack and start cycling that same day. Our first day is spent in Central Slovenia, mostly among mountains and in river valleys. This is an unknown region. We reach our first climb in a beautiful river valley, which leads to the accommodation. Our accommodation will be in a tiny mountain village.

Distance: 70 km, elevation: 1500 m. Difficulty: 4/5. Planned time: 4 hours.

2

Day 2: Bled, Kranjska Gora, Tarvisio

On our second day we immediately start with an ascent, we wind up to the top of the pass. We have a coffee there, and then we start a long descent towards Lake Bohinj. We will see the lake, then we will go up towards the famous Slovenian ski resort, over a beautiful pass. From there we head towards Bled. We take a look at the lake and then drive through a beautiful valley towards Kranjska Gora. The rest of the road will be a separate bicycle path, since this is already the region of the Millennium Path. Our accommodation will be in Kranjska Gora.

Distance: 80 km, elevation: 1400 m. Difficulty: 4/5. Planned time: 8 hours.

Day 3: Mangart, Bovec

On our third day the highest point of the tour awaits us! After Kranjska Gora, we enter Italy in a short section, crossing the border without even seeing it. Tarvisio is already waiting for us in Italy. Before Mangart we climb the Predil pass, which is an easier climb, located on the Italian-Slovenian border. Mangart is a dead end road, after Predil we reach the junction with a small slope. We will turn off the main road and come back here. The way up does not take you all the way to the top of the mountain (2679m), but ends below in a saddle (2072m), which is our goal. By the way, the Mangart saddle is the highest asphalt road in Slovenia. The average increase is 6.5%. After Mangart we come back on the same road and head along the Soca towards Bovec, but below Mangart we will stay in a guest house.

Distance: 55km, elevation gain: approx. 2100 m. Difficulty: 5/5. Planned time: 7 hours.

Day 4: Along the Soca

The first part of our ride today will take us through a beautiful and romantic valley towards Bovec. There are a lot of World War memorabilia in this part. We have coffee in Bovec, then head to the Soca Valley! On this day, we will ride along the Soca river almost all the way to Nova Gorica. We bike in beautiful canyons, on terraces above the river. At the end of the road, there is even a new bike path waiting for us! Our accommodation will be in Goriza.

Distance: 90 km, elevation: 1900 m. Difficulty: 4/5. Planned time: 8 hours.

Day 5: To the sea, then travel home

Last day we cycle from the Slovenian – Italian border to the sea. From Gorizia, we go up a small but rather steep pass to a vineyard, and then down to the sea. We end our trip in Trieste, Italy.

Difficulty: 3/5. Planned time: 7 hours.

TransSlovenia

Our accommodation will be in family pensions, apartment houses and hotels with double rooms.
