Dolomites: Sellaronda Bike Day

About the tour

In cycling, nothing gives more satisfaction and joy than when you reach a major peak or a 1,000-2,000-meter pass. This is a real challenge-tour for those amateurs who are persistent, strong, determined and want to ride iconic passes.

The basis of the tour is the Sellaronda Bike Day which is the largest cyclist fiesta in the Dolomites. The Sellaronda marks the road around the Sella mountain (peak), which is one of the most beautiful tours in Europe, it has four passes. The Bike day is organized twice a year, in early summer and autumn. On that day, all roads in the circle are closed to motorbikes and cars and can only be driven on by bicycle.

But if we’re already there, we’ll take advantage of the opportunity and climb the most beautiful passes of the Dolomites! The Dolomites are a popular destination for road cyclists. It is characterized by very high cliffs (2,500-3,000 meters) and sawtooth-like rocks jutting out in various forms. Anyone who has been there has a favorite mountain, because each shape is so unique and attractive. The Dolomites are also a popular destination for bicycle races, the Italian circuit race, the Giro d’Italia, regularly organizes stages here, as the climbs are serious attrition factors (everything is revealed on such an ascent)! It is a fact that you cannot cover 50 km in the Dolomites without having to go up some major climbs and passes, that are sometimes hundreds or even 1000 meters in level. This is not the regular cyclist environment! However, it is a field of challenge for the average person.

Dolomitok: Passo Gardena

During the tour (in addition to the Sellaronda), we also climb Giau, Falzarego, Valparola, and Fedaia. We’ve put our tour together for such cyclists who are not afraid of a challenge, want to adventure between high mountains, conquer mountain passes, enjoy breathtaking views (it’s worth suffering for the view)! tour to those with road bike experience, but at the same time, the tours are not impossible for an average person who is in better condition and exercises regularly. We will not rush on the tours, and even though road cycling is about individual performance, we will wait and help each other in sections where possible. The tour is only completable with a road bike!

Bicycle

Everyone participates in this tour with their own bike (road). A requirement is the best possible, at least 2*10 geat shift and drive (don’t forget about a good back row!)

Difficulty

The tours are hard (4/5, 5/5), only possible with a regular sporty physique if you have stamina, endurance and/or significant biking experience. (Info: What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?).

On this day our target will be the Fedaia pass. From the hotel we ride up to the Pordoi pass first. From the pass we descend to the town of Canazel, then begin our climb of the Fedaia pass. At the top of the pass, we will be almost under the Marmolada glacier. From there we descend to Rocca Pietore, from where we also climb to Arabba, and from there we go back to the accommodation, the Campolongo pass.

3rd day: Sellaronda Bike Day

On the day of the main attraction, we will go on one of the most beautiful and classic tours of the Dolomites. The Sellaronda (which means a circle around the Sella peak) is one of the best known and most popular tours in the Dolomites, as it takes you through four relatively easy passes with one of the most beautiful views along the way. Read our separate article about an older ride on the Sellaronda and Giau). The circle is traversed in a counter-clockwise direction. Since the accommodation is on the Campolongo pass, we start there towards the Gardena pass (2119m). This is a longer climb, from there we go down and with a little climbing we reach the most beautiful pass, Sella (2230m). From there, a very enjoyable and longer descent follows, followed by an equally longer climb to the Pordoi pass (2239m). From there we go down to Arabba, then back to our lodging (1850m).

4th day: Giau / Falzarego

The destination of our last day’s tour is one of the most beautiful passes in the Dolomites, Passo Giau (2236m). We start depending on this year’s accomodations, but the starting point of the climb will be Caprile. From Caprile we take a short climb to Selva di Cadore, the starting town of the Giau. Giau is the most difficult pass of the tour, this is the heavyweight division. The climb in the “short, but hearty” category, is 10km continuously ascent, with an average of a 9.1% increase (922m level). However, a magnificent view awaits you at the top. We descend from the pass to Cortina d’Ampezzo, the former Olympic city, which lies in a beautiful valley. After a breather, we arrive home through the second pass of the day (Passo Falzarego, 2117m) Falzarego is not a difficult pass, just long (16.5km, 913m, 5.6%). After reaching the top, we descend on a nice incline to Caprile.

Distance: 58 km, level: roughly 1850 m, time (approximately): 4 hours

5th day: travel home

Our accommodation will be in Arabba, along the route, in a high-quality wellness hotel (swimming pool, saunas, Jaccuzzi). The rooms are double. All our daily tours are accessible from the location, so we will not take a bus during the tour.
