Following in the footsteps of Jiří Menzel, who has brought Hrabal’s world to life so many times, we wander through the deep, dark pine forests of the Bohemian Forest on the Austrian border, along the wildly rushing, sometimes quietly meandering waters of the Vltava River.

Sometimes we cycle through the picturesque, tiny Czech villages of the hilly region, along the riverbank connecting World Heritage sites and fairy-tale towns, and sometimes we cycle away from the Vltava on gentle slopes. On our way, we pass several wonderful castles that are worth climbing, as we can quench our thirst with excellent Czech beers everywhere during our days.

Just like our excellent wine regions here at home, so many regions and settlements delight us with their own diverse golden yellow climate.

We end our week in the world heritage center of Prague, which evokes history.

About the tour

We will sleep in a different place every day on the tour, the support vehicle will bring our luggage. It is enough to carry only the most necessary things for the day on the bike/in a small backpack. We will ride an average of 60-90km a day.

The first half of the route winds through the Bohemian Forest Mountains near the Austrian border, so there are some small and large climbs waiting for us. From the second day onwards, the cycling is mostly downhill along the Vltava River. However, we do not ride along the river all the way, but rather on a hilly route with several small climbs and descents. The second and last days are the easiest, with practically no climbs. The third and fourth days are undulating hills.

We cycling the tour without rushing, looking around everywhere, marveling at the sights. We ride mostly on light traffic but good quality asphalt country roads. Except for a few kilometers of cobblestones and a few hundred meters of dirt roads, we cycle on paved roads.

Most of the route follows recommended, marked cycling routes. Often on the international Eurovelo 7 route, the Czech section of the so-called Path of the Sun, a cycle route connecting Europe from Sicily to the Arctic Circle.

On the way, unlike in our country, drinking water from street fountains is not widespread, so we should take care of our fluid supply in advance. However, grocery stores and local breweries are often found. Be prepared with Czech crowns in cash, because in the first few days it is not very possible to pay with a bank card, let alone euros.

Bicycle

Trekking, gravel, fitness bikes are recommended, e-bikes (trekking type) can also be brought.

You can also rent an e-bike. Renting ebikes is not included in the price of the tour, but we offer them at a discount than if you rent them elsewhere). An ebike is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor. It can be adjusted in several steps, so you can easily negotiate even the steepest climbs. Ebikes are very useful, as even those who don’t cycle much or don’t want to exert themselves due to their age or health can take part in the tour.

Difficulty:

This tour is basically easy (2/5).
On the tour, we stop a lot, rest, look around, eat, we don’t rush, we wait for those who are lagging behind, and the tour guides help us. We always indicate the specific level for the specific day. For those for whom this is not enough, we recommend our challenge tours (Tuscany, Pass tours), where we go more with higher levels. A similar, easier route is the tour along the Drava River.

1. nap: Utazás, első nap

We start our bike tour in Austria, in the town of Gmünd, located at the confluence of two rivers on one of the oldest European borders (unchanged since 1179), and immediately cross into the Czech Republic. At the beginning of the first day, we cycle through a small town with a 13th century castle and chateau, and then, at almost 800 m, we cycle through the pine forests of the Bohemian Forest, reaching the Vltava River and our first accommodation, Vyšší Brod.

Distance: 74 km, elevation gain 780m.
Difficulty: 3/5. Planned time: 6 hours

2. nap: Cesky Krumlov

Thinking of Jiří Menzel’s Oscar-winning film (Ostře sledované vlaky), we start our journey with a short train ride to a reservoir, then roll down the winding Vltava River to stop in the World Heritage-listed Český Krumlov. Then we leave the river, passing the famous Budweiser historical center, and arrive at our accommodation under the fairytale Hluboká Castle.

Distance: 83 km, elevation gain 370m.
Difficulty: 1/5. Planned time: 7 hours

3. nap: Písek

At the start, bypassing the Hluboká Castle Hill, we again wind along the Vltava River, surrounded by forests. This day is more about nature dotted with hills and slopes, we leave the Vltava River, and in the town of Písek, called the Gate of South Bohemia, we then cross the 13th century stone bridge, one of the most valuable national monuments of the country. Where we meet the central river of our entire vacation again. There, on a rock, rises the most characteristic royal castle, Zvíkov, also from the 13th century. Later, in the familiarly named Temešvár (but not from the Carpathian Basin), we cross the Vltava River again to reach our accommodation.

Distance: 91 km, elevation gain 1020m.
Difficulty: 3/5. Planned time: 9 hours

This day also passes through rolling forest-field hills, through small Czech villages. Today cannot be complete without a castle. We will also visit the luxuriously furnished Orlík Castle, towering above the Vltava reservoir, where the princely Schwarzenberg family still lives. We will pass by the largest hydroelectric power plant in the Czech Republic and leave our river again. We will not touch any larger settlements all day. Our accommodation for the day will also be in a small village.

Distance: 73 km, elevation gain 860m.
Difficulty: 3/5. Planned time: 7 hours

5. nap: Prága

On the last day, the landscape gradually becomes flat, and then we follow the Vltava River all the way, crossing it several times, until we reach the Czech royal city of Prague, which served as the seat of several Holy Roman Emperors in the Middle Ages, with its thousands of sights and authentic beer halls. Before that, we have a little bike ride on the world’s smallest “ferry”.

Distance: 64 km, elevation gain 510m.
Difficulty: 2/5. Planned time: 5 hours
