There is no question that the 415-kilometer cycling tour that crosses three countries and is in Europe’s TOP3 must be included in our offer! The tour starts from Salzburg, Austria (we go here by minibus) and ends in the Italian coastal town of Grado, from where we return home by car.
The tour crosses the Alps, but this does not require much effort, as we travel almost all the way through valleys surrounded by mountains! There are no long and merciless uphills, we go by train under the mountains, then descend between breathtaking mountain peaks and reach the beach. Every day we sleep in a different place, the luggage is brought after us by a car.
The route has several distinct sections: the first two-day alpine section runs from Salzburg to Bad Gastein, there will be climbs here, and we will reach the highest point at picturesque Bad Gastein. Then a train takes us under the mountain and from there we trickle down to Villach and then we go over to Italy. From Tarvisio we will ride on the bike path built on the site of the old railway route once used by the monarchy (Millennium Path), then we will drive towards Udine, the capital of the Friuli – Venezia – Giulia (FVG) province, among the vineyard hills, and finally reach the sea at Grado via Palmanova.

About the tour
The Alpen – Adriatic tour is the queen of European bicycle tours. A true, classic point-to-point tour that crosses Western Europe’s highest mountain, the Alps, then biking through breathtaking mountain peaks and valleys to reach the coast, while lining up hundreds of sights. The 415 km cycle path has existed as a unit since 2012, was created with European Union support, and has already won the “cycle path of the year” award. We will sleep in a different place every day during the tour, the escort car will bring our luggage after us. We go an average of 50-70 km a day, there will be tunnels too!
The first half of the road winds between the mountains of the Alps in the Hohe Tauern National Park, as we leave Salzburg, we get into the mountains, where some small and large uphills await us. The Gastein valley also works us up, and then we reach Carinthia, from where we head towards Udine and the sea. On the most beautiful part of the road, from Tarvisio, we will ride on the bike path built on the site of the old railway route once used by the monarchy! A relatively ascent road leads to the sea on the last two days. We do the tour in no hurry, looking everywhere and marveling at the sights.
This excellent cycle route is also popular because, although it is 415 km long, the elevation gain during that time is only 2,500 m (an average of 50 km and 300 meters of elevation per day). The tour was built in such a way that it can be used by most cyclists, there are no pass climbs, high mountain roads, the road mostly leads through valleys. Of course there are climbs, the first two days will be stronger climbs and of course several smaller climbs await us on the way, since we are in the Alps after all. The second 2/3 of the way is more of a descent (the last two hundred km, for example, is almost the entire way).
Bicycle
There will be gravel road on this tour (not that much), so we recommend a bike that can handle gravel roads! You can come with a touring bike, gravel, fitness or cross bike.
You can also rent an e-bike. Renting ebikes is not included in the price of the tour, but we offer them at a discount than if you rent them elsewhere). An ebike is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor. It can be adjusted in several steps, so you can easily negotiate even the steepest climbs. Ebikes are very useful, as even those who don’t cycle much or don’t want to exert themselves due to their age or health can take part in the tour.
Those who love mountains, valleys and beautiful winding roads, natural attractions.
For those who like point-to-point tours, who like to test themselves on longer distances, regardless of weather conditions.
Difficulty
This tour is basically easy (2/5), with exceptions of medium difficulty (3/5). The first two days have uphills, sometimes stronger on the 2nd day, but after that we usually go downhill. Although we mostly travel in valleys and riverbeds, we are still in the Alps, so we always find a climb! It can be completed with an average athletic physique. On the tour, we stop a lot, rest, look around, eat, we don’t rush, we wait for those who are lagging behind, and the tour guides help us. We always indicate the specific level for the specific day. For those for whom this is not enough, we recommend our challenge tours (Tuscany, Pass tours), where we go more with higher levels. A similar, easier route is the tour along the Drava River.
Do you think you can accomplish the requirements? Please read carefully: What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?).

Day 1: Travel, Salzburg - Werfen
We leave early in the morning, the journey is approx. 5 – 6 hours. We arrive in Salzburg after noon, then we immediately jump on our bikes and start the tour. The first section goes almost all the way along the river, in beautiful surroundings. In the first part, we get out of Salzburg along the river on a longer gravel section, then we wind through villages towards our destination. On the way we stop in Hallein, Golling (waterfall!), Werfen (has a beautiful castle!). Our accommodation will be on the side of the mountain, in a calm, quiet countryside, a few kilometers from the city. Anyone who wants to can go up the steep but short climb, if they can’t or don’t want to, we’ll take them up by car!)
Distance: 50 km, elevation: 570 m, planned time: 4 hours. Easy tour (2/5), with moderate ascent.
Day 2: Werfen - Bad Gastein
Distance: 67 km, elevation: 900 m, planned time: 5 hours. Medium difficulty (3/5), sometimes with a steeper climb.
Our second day will be the most difficult, because there will be stronger climbs. On this day we will get a taste of the Alps, there will be climbs, but the level will not be so dangerous and we won’t even have to go up to the pass, because we will be taking the train under the pass! At the beginning of the road we ride in the river valley, mostly on a gravel road. We leave St. Johann, Schwarzach, and then climb to see a reservoir in a beautiful setting. We have to climb here, after ascent and then passing through a tunnel at Lend we turn towards the Gastein valley and the pass. In the Gastein valley we will moderate rise, but in the end, Bad Gastein will make us sweat 🙂 Of course, those who can’t or don’t want to go up to the city, we will take them up to the accommodation. Our accommodation is located after Bad Gastein, in a hotel in Böckstein.
3 days: Bad Gastein - Spittal
Distance: 61 km, elevation: 400 m, planned time: 5 hours, easy tour (2/5), with many slopes.
After Bad Gastein we take the train, because there is no public road here, a train takes us under the pass to the other side to Carinthia. We arrive in Mallnitz by train (this is already Carinthia!), from where we go downhill almost all day. In the first small part of the road, we travel for kilometers on an old railway track, with a breathtaking view, on the side of the valley. From there we go down to Oberverlach on a steep ascent, the first part will be quite serpentine, and then along the Möll river we reach Möllbrucke. At Möllbrücke we will meet the route of the Drava tour, from here we will ride along the Drava to Spittal. Our accommodation will be near Spittal.
Day 4: Spittal - Tarvisio
Distance: 70 km, elevation: 600 m, planned time: 7 hours. Medium tour (2/5), with many slopes and ascents.
On this day we start from Spittal. we return to the route of the Drava tour,we will ride along the Drava all the way to Villach. After Villach turning towards Italy, Tarvisio. Our path takes us to Arnoldstein by the Gail River, then branching off from it, we follow Arnoldtsein to the border. After the border, we can see the Julian Alps in a beautiful mountainside, from where we reach Tarvisio.
Day 5: Tarvisio - Gemona
Distance: 70 km, elevation: 200 m, planned time: 8 hours. Easy hike (1/5), with many slopes.
The most beautiful part of our tour is coming. This section is the Millennium Path, with great bridges, tunnels and beautiful views. We also visit Venzone, a very nice little town with a castle and old town. The road runs on asphalt all the way on this day. Our accommodation will be in Gemona.
Day 6: Gemona - Udine
Distance: 50 km, elevation: 300 m, planned time: 4 hours. Easy hike (1/5), with many slopes.
It will be a very curvy day, with many hidden, small roads, and some climbs, ending with the magnificent Udine. On this day, we will also deviate from the traditional route to see the most beautiful places in the FVG province!
Day 7: Udine - Grado
Distance: 65 km, elevation gain: approx. 30 m, planned time: 4 hours. Easy hike (1/5), with lots of slopes.
On our last day we arrive in Grado, a beautiful seaside town. On the way we also visit Palmanova (a star-shaped town!) After the hike, if there is time, we take a swim, then pack up and head home. We arrive home late at night.
Optional program
On the way, we will not only cycle, but also take an optional programs:
City tours – depends on weather and possibilities (included in the basic price),
Discovering waterfalls, castles, castles, museums and natural beauty.
On the road, our accommodation will be different every day, mostly in high-quality apartment hotels, family apartments or hotels. We sleep most of the time in Austria, here we usually stay in typical Austrian pensions, in rooms with 2-3 beds.
