Come with us to the Italian region that is one of the birthplaces of European cycling, where cycling is not only a sport, but also a lifestyle! There are few places, not only in Italy, but in the whole world, where cycling is so respected and where so many world-class riders have come from. Lombardy gave many famous riders to cycling and one of the oldest cycling races, the Giro di Lombardia, was born here.

The color of Lake Cancano is amazingly beautiful

The province covers a huge area, but we are traveling to the NE part, around Bormio, to the Stlevio National Park. Our main goal is to ride in the cycling “holy” place, to climb the Stelvio, which is the dream of every road cyclist! The 2757m high pass is located on the border of Lombardy and is the second highest paved pass in Europe. The hairpin turns of the last 5 kilometers of the classic climb over the Prato side are the most iconic visual elements of roadbiking. If we’re there, we’ll also climb the other two iconic passes of the area, Gavia and Mortirolo.

In 2025, we have planned the tour for Stelvio Bike Day!
The accommodation for the tour will be in Bormio and we will cycle from here. The accommodation is a wellness hotel with double rooms.

This tour is not an easy one, we recommend it to those who like hard challenges, who are persistent and do not despair of “a little climb” 🙂 Because it will be quite a lot! In return, we are presented with a sight that is unique not only in the whole of Europe, but also in the world! It’s worth joining!

About the tour

In 2025 we have also scheduled the tour for the Stelvio Bike Day! The tour is quite difficult. We are looking for cyclists who feel they can complete it. Of course the pace is slow, but due to the many daily levels (2000+), the series load is significant. If you have experience in climbing, but have not ridden this much, or are looking for challenges, feel free to apply, as this is primarily about the challenge and we are not going at a competitive pace. There is also the opportunity to rest! The tour can only be completed by road bike.

The Stelvio is known to almost everyone who rides a bike. The Passo dello Stelvio is located at an altitude of 2,757 meters above sea level and is famous for its many hairpins. The 5 km hairpin section at the top of the valley is arguably one of the most famous not only in Italy, but in the whole world. We climb both sides of the great pass!

Of course, in addition to the Stelvio, we also climb the deservedly famous Gavia and the infamous Mortirolo.

Bicycle

Road bikes are accepted on this tour. During the tour we will climb several passes and higher points.

Difficulty

Every day of the tour is difficult (5/5), and can only be completed with an average athletic physique if you have stamina, endurance and/or more bike experience. (Info: What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?).

For your every other question we answer here: read the FAQ, send an email or call us!

1

Day 1: Travel

We travel on the first day. We leave early in the morning to arrive at the accommodation in Bormio after the 10+ hour journey. We will take the accommodation and prepare the bikes. if we arrive on time, there is still plenty of time to ride.

2

Day 2: Warm-up: Lago di Cancano

Lago di Cancano is a beautiful blue lake NW of Bormio that is actually a dam. The ascent consists of several hairpin bends and is deservedly famous.

Distance: 45km, elevation gain: approx. 1300 m. Difficulty: 4/5.
Planned time: 6 hours.

3

Day 3: Gavia and Mortirolo

After the warm-up comes the important part! On this day, our destination is Gavia and Mortirolo. First a Gavia, we start from Bormio. Gavia is an iconic mountain, the Giro has gone over it many times, it is the site of serious competitions. The ascent is not terribly difficult (25.6 km long, 1404m elevation and average 5.5%). After Gavia, we descend for a very long time, then follow a main road to reach the entrance to Mortirolo. The mountain is famous (or scandalous) for its difficulty. We attack from the south, from the easier side (17.2 km, 1153m level, average 6.7%) and climb up. From here we will back to the accommodation.

Distance: 110km, elevation gain: approx. 2800 m.
Difficulty: 5/5. Planned time: 8 hours.

4

Day 4: Stelvio

On this day we will climb the Stelvio, even from both directions, with the inclusion of the Umbrailpass. This is necessary mainly because the classic climb of the Stelvio is on the other side (from Prato). A difficult day awaits us, the distance will not be much, but the level will be. We start from Bormio and for the first time we do not go from the classic direction, which is a little easier than the other. From Bormio, the beginning is immediately the most difficult part, then it will be a little easier for the ending to be hard again. The saying that it is difficult not because of the steepness but because of the length also applies here. A particularly easier section awaits us in the middle, then we turn left at the Swiss border and descend towards Trafoi via the Umbrail pass. From here comes the classic side of the Stelvio, the 24.5 km climb. The level is 1808m, on average 7.4%. Its difficulty comes not from its steepness, but from its length!

Difficulty: 5/5. Planned time: 8 hours.

Day 5: Travel home

In the morning we check out and go home.

Our accommodation in Bormio will be in a Wellnesshotel, in double rooms.
