On this tour, we will visit the classical countryside of central Tuscany. World-famous masterpieces, undeservedly unknown but beautiful places and the typical undulating Tuscan landscape alternate. Our accommodation will be in the central region of Tuscany, in a small medieval town called Montaione. The central location of the place (between Siena, Florence and Pisa) allows you to explore the little-known but very authentic Tuscan countryside north of Siena.

When applying, you don’t have to pay while filling out the form, you only need to enter some data (be careful, the form is several pages long!). About the tour
In addition to our classic Tuscany tour, this is our other classic tour: the roads of Central Tuscany are a meeting of nature and culture, of known and unknown Tuscany. Sometimes we discover world-famous places, and the next day we discover hidden, undeservedly unknown roads, towns and castles. The accommodation takes us to unknown lands,because who has heard of Montaione? But we are talking about a very charming, typical Tuscan village!
At the same time, if you go a few kilometres further, you’ll discover places and people as famous as Andrea Bocelli or Florence, Siena, Pisa. But I could go on and on about hilltop towns that most of you are unfamiliar with, like Colle, Casola, Volterra, San Gimignano. The wonder is not necessarily world-famous.
This area is the hidden treasure of Tuscany! The roads wind through the hills, sometimes you have to fight the climbs, but the reward is in the scenery! We will have time to visit all the nearby places, and we will. We plan to visit the better places not only by bike, but also by car in the evenings! We also plan optional programmes.
Difficulty
This tour is of average difficulty in Tuscany, which is more difficult than the local tours because Tuscany is quite hilly. The routes have been designed so that a person of average physical fitness can do them, but with a little perseverance, those who are less active can do them too. For this tour, the Elba Maremma is a little easier, the Classic Tuscany (Siena) is more difficult. On the tour, we stop a lot, rest, look around, eat, we don’t rush, we wait for those who are lagging behind, and the tour guides help us. And we always indicate the level for the specific day. Bicycle
Everyone can come on the tour with their own bike. The tour is asphalt, so we don’t go on gravel, so a hybrid, cross, or touring bike is recommended, but you can also come with a gravel or road bike. (Note: the tour is not at road speed!)
You can also rent an e-bike. Renting ebikes is not included in the price of the tour, but we offer them at a discount than if you rent them elsewhere). An ebike is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor. It can be adjusted in several steps, so you can easily negotiate even the steepest climbs. Ebikes are very useful, as even those who don’t cycle much or don’t want to exert themselves due to their age or health can take part in the tour.

Day 1: Travel
We depart early in the morning from Budapest with our minibus. The journey takes 10-11 hours, depending on traffic, arriving at the hostel in Montaione in the late afternoon.
2nd day: San miniato
On our first day of cycling, we’ll warm up with a ride around the area. We drive to the nearby town of San Miniato. Departing from the accommodation, we will drive through beautiful Tuscan countryside to the town of Castelfiorentino, where we will take a deserted road to San Miniato, where we will visit the famous tower with its fantastic views. ,San Miniato is uphill, as the town is built on top of a hill (like all decent Tuscan towns). After San Miniato we take a longer ride back up to Montaione.
Distance: 53 km, difference in altitude: about 700 m, 2/5, easier hike with some climbing, planned time with sightseeing: 6 hours.
Day 3: Lajatico and the Theatre of Silence
Our destination on this day is Lajatico, a little-known town on a high hilltop. We start from the accommodation, rolling down a beautiful slope to Lajatico, Andrea Bocelli’s birthplace (where he returns every year to give a performance). We will visit the theatre (Teatro del Silenzio), then have lunch and coffee in the town centre. After Lajatico, we climb up to the town of Peccioli, and then return to our starting point on a gravel road.
Distance: 75 km, altitude difference: about 1100 m. Difficulty: 3/5. Planned time: 6-7 hours including sightseeing.
Day 4: San Gimignano, Certaldo
This day is a guaranteed visual success. We will see great scenery and go to beautiful cities. The tour includes one of the most famous towns in the area (and perhaps in Tuscany), San Gimignano. The town is famous for its many stone towers, several tens of metres high. This medieval metropolis of “skyscrapers” had 70 towers hundreds of years ago, but sadly only a dozen remain today. In San Gimignano there is a famous ice-cream parlor, a few years ago it won the “world championship”! The road to get there will be sufficiently undulating, with lots of ups and downs. We cycle from San Gimignano to Certaldo on a wonderful downhill! Certaldo is the town where Boccaccio was born and died. From there we take a longer climb back to Montaione.
Distance: 60 km, altitude difference: about 1100 m. Difficulty: 3/5, with one major and several minor climbs. Planned time: 8 hours with sightseeing.
Day 5: Rest day
Wednesday is a rest day, we will relax by the pool in the morning and visit Leonardo’s hometown (Vinci) in the afternoon.

Our accommodation is in the central region of Tuscany, near the small medieval town of Montaione. The well-located, quiet, rural agrotourism hotel offers 2-3 bedroom apartments. There is a well-kept garden and swimming pool next to the villa.
