We invite you on a very unique and special trip to Tuscany! It is truly unique, as the tour takes you to two different Tuscan regions: one is less known, not so “Tuscan” in character, but at the same time offers a once-in-a-lifetime experience with its wild natural beauty, beautiful valleys, majestic mountains and charming towns. The other, on the other hand, presents the most beautiful Tuscan, classic landscapes. And of course, there is the coast, the blue water, which dot the “i”. The two tours are connected by the southern part of Tuscany, since both are located there. On the tour we will discover the most beautiful places of southern Tuscany: the more famous towns, charming secluded areas, the Crete Senesi south of Siena.
Further south along the west coast is the Maremma region, one of the least known and visited areas of Tuscany, but one of the best areas for cycling in spring. We will visit beautiful small villages like Bolgheri, Sassetta, Monteverdi Marittimo or Suvereto.
And of course we’ll be ferrying over to Elba, the largest island in Tuscany!
We will have two accommodations, one south of Siena and one near Suvereto. You can also ride on the day of the move.

About the tour
We invite you on a less classic, but very unique and special Tuscan journey! It is truly unique, as it takes you to two very beautiful Tuscan regions. There will be known and lesser-known areas, towns, wild natural beauties, beautiful valleys, majestic mountains and charming villages. And of course, the coast, which does the “i” justice. The tour is a mix of our two previous tours, in the heart of Tuscany (Crete Senesi) and the NY coast (Maremma), with the best roads! Our first area is the real, genuine Tuscany, as you see in the movies. The tours lead through the most beautiful Tuscan countryside, ancient Etruscan and medieval towns, olive and fir trees line the road, farms spread out on the tops of distant hills, a cavalcade of a thousand colors and scents, accompanied by winding asphalt strips! As is common in Tuscany, you often have to climb hills to get to the cities, but it’s worth it because you’ll be greeted by picturesque views and a delightful atmosphere everywhere!
Further south along the west coast is the Maremma region, one of the least known and least visited areas of Tuscany: close to the north of the Tyrrhenian coast, it is a backdrop of uncrowded, unfrequented roads, wild mountain serpentines and small towns perched on majestic hills. Who wouldn’t want to visit cities with beautiful names like: Massa Marittima, Sassetta, Castagneto Carducci, Monteverdi Marittimo, Suvereto? Only good things can come out of this! And we haven’t even mentioned Elba!
The Maremma region is the least known and least visited part of south-western Tuscany, bordering the coast of Liguria and Tyrrhenia, from Livorno to Grosseto. This is due to the fact that, until the beginning of the last century, it was a marshy area that decimated the people. The region is considered the ancestral home of the Etruscans, and in recent decades several ancient, huge Etruscan cities have been excavated. Still relatively sparsely populated today, it offers visitors wonderful roads, mountain villages and great beaches. They have great agrotourism, low traffic and spectacular roads. Among other things, it has one of the best cycling routes in Italy and is also the crossing point for one of the best cycling routes in Tuscany, the Elbe.
We will have two accommodations, one south of Siena and one east, in Suvereto, but the day of the move will also be spent cycling.
Bicycle
Since this is a general, trekking route, almost all types of bikes are accepted on this tour. We ride on asphalt throughout the tour, so you can also bring a road bike.
You can come with a gravelle, cross, hybrid or touring bike.
It is also possible to rent an e-bike. Renting ebikes is not included in the price of the tour, but we offer them at a discount than if you rent them elsewhere). An ebike is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor. It can be adjusted in several steps, so you can easily negotiate even the steepest climbs. The ebikes are very useful for people who don’t normally cycle much, or who don’t want to exert themselves because of their age or health. About eBike rental.
Who is it for?
If you’ve already been to Tuscany, you’ve seen the typical sights, but you want to go back and see something different and special.
If you’ve never been to Tuscany, but want to start your exploration of a unique region.
If you love the sea and the hilly, mountainous countryside and nature.
If you like completely deserted, undiscovered landscapes and cities untouched by mass tourism.
Difficulty
The daily climbs are moderate to difficult.
Although not a mountain pass, this area of Tuscany is (not) easy. The routes are set up so that an average person with an athletic physique (and cycling background) can do them.
Regular training and preparation are essential.
The level and distance are above average, with some longer uphill or more level routes. Tuscany is a hilly region, much hillier than the Balaton highlands, but the hike can be completed with a little will and muscle. On the tour we stop a lot, rest, look around, have coffee, eat. We don’t rush, we wait for the laggards and the guides help us. We always indicate the level and difficulty of the specific day. For those who find these levels and distances too short, we recommend our challenge tours (Tuscany, Dolomites), where we do more hikes with higher levels.

We answer all your other questions here:
Day 1: Travel
Departure early Saturday morning, journey time is (depending on traffic) 11-12 hours. We arrive at the accommodation in the afternoon. We will not be cycling anymore that day.
Day 2: Crete Senesi
On our first day we’ll head straight for the heart of it! We’ll visit a little-known but beautiful landscape, the Crete Senesi! The greyish-brown land, dotted with erosions, stretching from Siena to the SE is one of the most beautiful areas to be seen in Tuscany. Sunset or sunrise cast deep shadows on the “ragged” hills. Anyone who has seen this region once will never forget it. On the tour, we’ll touch down in Asciano, the center of the Crete. Distance (longer): 50 km, elevation gain: approx. 800 m, planned time: 8 hours. Difficulty of the tour: 2/5.
On this day we will discover several abandoned towns, including Chiusure, which is a small village with no people, not visited by tourists, where life has stopped, but the view of the surrounding area is breathtaking. One of our most beautiful destinations is a monastery that is still in operation today, Monte Oliveto Maggiore. The monastery is located on a little-traffic road, hidden among cypress trees. We will reach the almost thousand-year-old monastery, which can still be visited today, by winding along beautiful roads. After the monastery, there is a downhill section to Buonconvento, where we will have lunch. The tour follows the route of the famous L’eroica retro cycling race in some places! After Buonconvento, we turn north, uphill and downhill sections follow each other, we will visit the small town of Murlo, which is only a few hundred meters in diameter, and then we will reach home on an undulating, very beautiful road. Distance: 70 km, elevation gain: about 1000 m, planned time: 8 hours. Hike difficulty: 3/5, with steep climbs in places.
This day is for little-known but classic Tuscan towns, and this region also holds the most beautiful Tuscan photo locations for us. We will visit the Orcia Valley. We will head towards Torrenieri, then we will cycle to San Qurico d’Orcia on the route of the L’eroica race, from where we will take one of the most photographed and spectacular roads to Pienza, a famous town for Pecorino cheese, and then to Montepulciano, a town that produces excellent wines and dominates the hilltop. We will look around at the winding streets and then continue on. On third-class, little-known but beautiful cedar-lined roads, we will reach Monticchiello, a small jewel box. From here, after a lot of rolling and a small climb, we will return to the classic Tuscan landscape and then home. Distance: 84 km, elevation gain: approx. 1400 m, planned time: 8 hours. Difficulty of the hike: 3/5, with some uphill sections.
On this day we move to SW.
We pack up early in the morning and drive to the other hostel. Those who would like to cycle can also go by bike. Distance: 90km, elevation gain: approx. 600 m.
Difficulty: 2/5, with gentle climbs and many descents. Planned time: 7 hours.
Day 6: The coast and the Etruscans
On this day we follow in the footsteps of the Etruscans: our destination is the nearby Baratti Bay and Populonia, the (remains of) the Etruscan village that dominated the area from above. We start from home and our first destination is Campiglia Marittima, which we visit. Then we head towards Baratti Bay. In the bay, enjoy the calm, forested beach. Stronger cyclists can also cycle up to Populonia, a short but tough climb. The second half of our journey takes us past the coastal pine trees to San Vincenzo, a port town, from where we cycle back to Campiglia.
Distance: 70 km, altitude difference: about 650 m. Difficulty: 2/5. Planned time: 8 hours. With two small climbs.
Day 7: Geothermal power plants
Our penultimate day is spent in one of the most unique parts of Maremma and Tuscany. This is the inland area of volcanic activity, geothermal power plants and geysers. Our destination is the largest geothermal power plant park in the world. set in the wooded hills of Tuscany. Departing from our accommodation, we reach the area through a landscape of rolling hills, sulphur smells, geothermal lakes, power plant chimneys and metal pipes running from the power plants. The erupting sulphurous gases and yellowish-brownish earth provide the backdrop. We check out the park and then just go back to the accommodation. On the way, we will also try a local brewery.
Distance: 80 km, altitude difference: about 1100m. Difficulty: 3/5 with two major climbs. Planned time: 8 hours.
Day 8: Elba
This day will be spent entirely in Elba, the most enjoyable, most beautiful, but also the most difficult day of our week-long tour! Early in the morning, we ferry over and spend the day sailing around the western part of Elba. Our route takes us almost all the way to the sea, with hardly any tourists in spring and autumn, so we cycle on almost deserted roads and enjoy the blue sea. Sometimes we stop at a nice beach, maybe it will be cold for swimming (the sea is 20-21 degrees). For lunch we eat octopus or seafood prepared with local specialities. The road winds away from the sea in places, up into the mountains, offering magnificent panoramic views. In the afternoon we arrive back at the port and ferry back to Piombino. If the team is in agreement and the stamina is there, a longer route is possible.
Distance: 70km, altitude difference: about 900 m. Difficulty: 3/5, longer distance, with one or two steeper climbs.l. Planned time: 8-9 hours.
Day 9: journey home
We check out in the morning and drive home. We’ll travel during the day and arrive home in the afternoon.
Both of our accommodations are typical Tuscan farmhouses, agrotourismo. Our first accommodation will be south of Siena, located in the hills. Our second accommodation will be in the middle of “nowhere”, not far from the coast, near the village of Suvereto, in an agrotourism with a swimming pool in a calm and quiet area. Accommodation at both accommodations is in equipped, two- or three-bedroom apartments (with two beds per room). Single accommodation is theoretically possible, but please let us know in time so that we can ask.
