Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) is the largest lake in Italy and beyond, one of the most popular destinations in northern Italy. The Mediterranean setting, the towering, sky-scraping mountains and the blue, crystal-clear waters are a blend not to be missed. However, the lake is not just for traditional tourists, but also for active tourism. There are countless better and better trails and cycle paths in the area. From spring to autumn, the Garda is a cyclist’s paradise, with plenty of cyclists, bike shops, service stations and rental shops.
You can also cycle around the lake (about 160km), but it’s not worth it because of the heavy traffic and the many tunnels, there are much more beautiful and cool places in the mountains if you turn away from the lake. This is what we aim to do on this tour! We will also cycle along the lake shore, but mainly in the surrounding hills, with fantastic views and paths, and great views of the water. Experienced people know that wherever you turn away from the water, it will definitely be climb 🙂 But the point is that this tour does not require such enormous effort, it is more of a sometimes easier – sometimes harder type of hike.

About the tour
The location of Lake Garda is fantastic: between the Alps and the Po Valley, it is a transition between mountain and plain, but also in terms of climate: in a mountainous environment, Mediterranean vegetation thrives and the weather is relatively warm and long. The lake’s waters are very pleasant and its shores are bordered by beaches, hotels and campsites. Ideal for a holiday or an active holiday. The scenery is spectacular, with high mountain peaks and cliffs everywhere, especially in the north – north-west. We are also staying here, in Riva.
The tour will mainly target popular routes in the area. We will cycle to some spectacular places. We will drive to iconic places such as the Sarche valley, which leads through steep cliffs, to Tremosine, a village isolated by the mountains, to the world-famous Forra serpentine, which Winston Churchill described as the eighth wonder of the world. And one of Italy’s most spectacular gorge roads, with tunnels carved into the rock, narrow paths and breathtaking panoramas. But we also visit Monte Bald, where we take the cable car up to the top (1800 metres), and from there we cycle down. And, of course, we’ll see the completed part of the famous “floating” bike path around the lake, and even cycle along it (they’re still a long way from building around the lake, it’s only a few km away!)
Bicycle
You can come on the tour with almost any bike, but we recommend gravel bikes. Most of the cycling will be on tarmac cycle paths and country roads, but there will also be some gravel, especially on the Ponale road and the shorter sections of Monte Baldo. So you can come with almost any kind of bike: gravel, cross, hybrid or touring. Those who are not afraid of gravel, even on country roads.
You can also rent an e-bike. Renting ebikes is not included in the price of the tour, but we offer them at a discount than if you rent them elsewhere). An ebike is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor. It can be adjusted in several steps, so you can easily negotiate even the steepest climbs. Ebikes are very useful, as even those who don’t cycle much or don’t want to exert themselves due to their age or health can take part in the tour.
Difficulty
The tours are moderately difficult, one or two days are more difficult, but they will also be easier (2/5, 3/5).
There are 5-700 m of altitude per day. In this are, of course, climbs, as the mountainous environment provides this, but it can be completed with an average athletic physique and some cycling experience. There will be a long downhill and once a longer uphill section (Monte Baldo day) (Info:
What is there to know about the difficulty of the tours? Is the tour difficult for you?). There is a more difficult version of the tour for road-bikers!
For your every other question we answer here: read the FAQ, send an email or call us!
Day 1: Travel
Early morning departure from Budapest by minibus to Riva del Garda.
Day 2: Lago di Tano and the Sarca Valley
This road is a roller coaster ride through roads with little traffic. From Riva we head north on the cycle path. The lake is followed by a spectacular bike ride and the Sacra River Valley, with great views. Our first town is Arco, with a beautiful castle. We cycle to Ponte Arche, then climb a small serpentine road to another cycle path that runs through a spectacular valley. From there we continue by road to the Ballino Pass (not very high – 750m). From there we descend to the lake, but what a descent!
Distance: 70km, altitude: about 850m
Day 3: Tremosine and Forra serpentine
On this route we will visit the unmissable spot of Lake Garda, one of the most beautiful panoramic roads in the natural environment, the SP38, also known as the Strada della Forra (Forra Gorge Road), which plunges into a unique environment. One of Italy’s most spectacular gorge roads, with tunnels carved into the rock, narrow paths and breathtaking views, leads up to the village of Tremosine. Tremosine was for a very long time an isolated village, inaccessible. Winston Churchill called the Strada della Forra the eighth wonder of the world.
Distance: 46km, altitude: about 630 m
Day 4: Ponale road
This day we will visit the famous Ponale road and the Ledro lake, not far from its ” top “. The Ponale road leads directly up into the mountains from Riva del Garda. The road is interspersed with heavily graveled sections. Sometimes on tarmac, sometimes on gravel up to Ledro Lake. There we go around the lake and descend back to where we came up.
Distance: 36km, altitude: about 680 m
Day 5: Monte Baldo
Monte Baldo is the famous mountain that towers over Lake Garda.y. Long climbs, spectacular views. Our destination is the Rifugio Graziani at an altitude of 1800 metres, which we will do by cable car. The cable car takes us up to 1780 m from Malcesin (we take a bicycle). The hike is mostly downhill, almost all the way down the eastern side of the Garda (the first kilometres are on gravel!). The trail is dotted with several panoramic viewpoints with magnificent views of Lake Garda and the Adige Valley.
Distance: 60km, level: about 300m.
Day 6: Journey home
On this day, we will be travelling home.
Accommodation in Riva del Garda, in a 3-star hotel with swimming pool, in double rooms.
