Come with us to Carinthia, the southernmost province of Austria, with rivers, sparkling sunshine and mountains in the background! Our hikes wind through three beautiful river valleys, alongside lakes and green alpine meadows.

The source of the Drava above Toblach (Dobbiaco)

The tour is one of the easier ones, as we don’t climb any passes, we only cycle in river valleys, mostly on downhill paths. Most of the route is on a segregated cycle path. We cycle on the awesomely named Glockner cycle path (don’t be scared, it’s downhill 🙂 along the Drava cycle path and the Gail River. We will travel through central Carinthia with its famous lakes (Lake Millstatti) and one day we will cross the Tyrol and Italy. The accommodation is in one place, not far from Lienz.

Along the Gail River

About the tour

Carinthia can safely be said to be the jewel in the crown of Austrian tourism, with millions of people visiting this mountainous, lake-fringed region every year. Carinthia is also a realm of lakes and rivers, with more than 1200 lakes. The cycle paths here usually either lead to lakes and rivers or run alongside them, so we’ll be touching water on our rides every day.

The southernmost province of Austria enjoys a lot of sunshine, so in summer you can cycle in an almost Mediterranean environment. Of course the alpine climate is present all the time, sometimes even in June you need a warmer clothes! This makes for very pleasant, cycling-friendly weather in summer, which is only enhanced by the excellent infrastructure: in Carinthia (and throughout Austria) a lot of effort is put into creating and maintaining off-road cycle paths.

Our accommodation will be in a beautiful valley, not far from Lienz. During the 5 days, you will enjoy exciting, eye-catching tours on well-maintained cycle paths. We also hike through the gateway to the Dolomites, cycle along the Drava, cycle in the Grosglockner valley and along the Gail river. We’ll go around tarns and lakes.

Bicycle

It is also possible to rent an e-bike. Renting ebikes is not included in the price of the tour, but we offer them at a discount than if you rent them elsewhere). An ebike is a bicycle that is powered by an electric motor. It can be adjusted in several steps, so you can easily negotiate even the steepest climbs. The ebikes are very useful for people who don’t normally cycle much, or who don’t want to exert themselves because of their age or health. About eBike rental.

Recommend it to

Anyone who loves the summer Alpine countryside, the clean air, the green meadows, the majestic peaks.
Who would avoid the usual summer beach activities.

Difficulty

This tour is considered an easy one. We usually cycle on this segregated cycle path, in complete safety, with low altitude changes. Over the three days, each tour follows a river downstream. The official route sometimes deviates from the rivers, so there are some steep climbs, but the routes are set up so that an average person with an average physical condition can do it. We avoid summit assaults, no 2-3000 m peaks 🙂 The hikes are mostly in valleys and riverbeds. On the tour, we stop a lot, rest, look around, eat, we don’t rush, we wait for those who are lagging behind, and the tour guides help us. We always indicate the level of the specific tour.

Day 1: Travel

Early morning departure to Austria, on the route Győr – Szombathely – Villach. In the evening we arrive at our accommodation, which will be in a small town not far from Lienz.

Day 2: Dráva river trip from Toblach to Lienz

In the morning we drive to Toblach, from where we start the tour. Toblach is located in the Dolomites in Italy. The first part of the hike takes you to the source of the Drava, Lake Drava. We then set off towards Austria. The first section is a particularly easy one, as the road slopes steadily and noticeably. We cross several bridges over the river to San Candido, while the Dolomites and then the 2-3000m peaks of the Austrian Alps rise up alongside. This is already Tirol. The road descends steadily, moderately for the first 20 km, then quite steeply until Lienz. Sometimes we pass through beautiful forests, far from inhabited settlements. The river is quite shallow at the beginning, then starts to widen around Lienz. San Candido is a nice little town, we pass through it and then head towards Sillian, where we cycle along the left bank. After Abfaltersbac, the cycle path runs close to the mountain, offering fantastic views of the valley slopes and the villages in the valley. After Assling the valley narrows again, When we arrive in Lienz, we have a look around and then drive through the town. From Lienz we continue along the left bank of the Drava to the accommodation.

Distance: 70 km, difference in altitude: about 200 m. Difficulty: 1/5. Planned time: 8 hours (sightseeing included).

Day 3: Glockner cycle path along the Möll river

On this day we travel to Heiligenblut at the foot of the Großglockner, the southern starting point of the Großglockner Alpine Panorama Trail, the northwestern tip of Carinthia. The small town lies at 1288 metres, if you go further, the first stop on the Hochtor Pass panoramic road, at 2504 metres. Of course we don’t cycle up, but after a bit of sightseeing we head down the Glockner cycle path. We will cycle through the beautiful valley of the Möll, among the mountains of the High Tauern range. After a while the road bends east towards Obervellach. The road slopes downhill all the way to Obervellach approx. We will descend 700 metres. Our journey ends at Mölbrücke, where the river flows into the Dráva and where our cycle route joins the cycle route along the Dráva. From here we take a minibus to the accommodation.

Distance: 70 km, difference in altitude: about 100 m. Difficulty: 1/5. Planned time: 6 hours.

4

Day 4: Gail River bike ride

This is the day for the cycle path along the River Gail. The valley you cycle through runs parallel to the Italian border, all the way to Villach. The cycle path slopes downhill all the way, for 80km approx. It has a 300m difference in level, downhill. We will take a minibus to the starting point and at the end of the trip we will take a minibus to the accommodation.

Distance: 80 km, difference in altitude: about 100 m. Difficulty: 1/5. Planned time: 6 hours.

Day 5: Travel home

We check out in the morning and travel home. We’ll travel during the day and arrive home in the afternoon.

Our accommodation will be in a hotel not far from Lienz, in double rooms.
